03:00 pm - Pyramids, Dungeons, and um... centuries that last minutes.

How's that for a profound title?

But before I get to the inspiration for said title, allow me to bitch and whine.

WHY the FUCK can I not find a working air pump in this city? Not just this city - my home, my university, my chick's place, ANYWHERE. Are you telling me I gotta go to a mechanic to inflate a flat tire? Seriously?

I mean, gas prices fucking suck, but at least I can FIND gas!

--

I've started working out. Been a lil' over a week. When I get enough sleep, I'm energized throughout the day. I didn't get enough sleep last night, but I still feel better. Just that I'm tired today.

Anyway, consider this my official whining about being tired.

I weigh...*drumroll* 307 pounds. Yeah, no shit. Isn't that a staggering fucking number? Like how am I alive right now? Wanna know what inspired me to get my fat ass to the gym? Besides the fear of dying, I mean...

Maiden.

Yup.

Iron. Fucking. Maiden.

Those old fucks running around the stage and shit (and Gers looks like a fucking corpse) rocking harder than I could even think about doing. Yeah, I gotta fix some issues I have. So, there ya go... nothing drastic, just eating somewhat better and exercising in the morning. I haven't cut out sodas yet - I'm saving that for after the church trip. Don't wanna be too much of a dick to the kids do to caffeine withdrawls.

In B4 "you fat fuck" comments. I know I'm fat. Like what, I'm going to die of shock when some dumb fucker points it out? I don't mind telling you how much I weigh, either. You know I'm fat, might as well quantify it. I'm hoping that number gets smaller. Feel free to ask me about it if I don't post it.

--

Okay, I'm done. Now the meat. First off, shame on me for not mentioning Maiden before. Took the chick, and she loved it - and she wasn't into Maiden previously. So yes, Maiden rules. Here, have some assorted pics and videos:

That's all you get. If you missed the show, you fucked up. You blew it. Sucks to be you. But don't worry, Maiden pulls out the Powerslave set about as often as Queensrÿche promises their next one will be conceptual.

Oh. Wait.

Went to Worldwide D&D Game Day last weekend, and my regular play group asked about it. You didn't ask, but I'm a-gonna tell ya anyway:

Actually, I'm gonna heavily edit the meat of this post, because if any of you locals want to L2D&D, I'll probably use this adventure to do it. Anyway, here's the spoiler-censored version:

So we get to Midnight a little before noon and head to the back to the gaming area.

If you haven't seen the gaming area, it's roughly the size of the one they had at their Westheimer/Synott location. They also have one smaller enclosed room about the size of your average master bathroom if you want to run a more private game, I guess.

So yeah, last Saturday was not only Worldwide D&D Game Day, it was also the day of the monthly meeting for Houston Gamers - the boardgaming types. Seriously? Midnight couldn't of asked them to put it off a week or so?

Credit where it's due, that Houston Gamers group gets a good-sized turnout. The D&D group did, too... but the Houston Gamers group was ON TIME.

12:15 rolls around, and I'm about to leave. It's just me, the kid, and one or two other guys. We're asked if we can go into the side room since we're the smaller group. No problem.

Then the DM shows up.

Then another half-dozen people show up, and we're in this small cramped room. The DM tells us we're going to play "Keep on the Shadowfell" - which my regular play group is already doing. Ah hell - I woke up for THIS? Me and the kid bow out and look to see if there are any interesting board games being played. A few mins later, someone gets us and tells us the DM misspoke, it's "Into the ShadowHAUNT" we'll be playing. 4E likes shadows, apparently. So we sit back down.

So the DM's trying to accommodate the 10 people that want to play, and he's taking pre-gens from "Keep on the Shadowfell" to do so. Some of us aren't getting free minis, as he only has five, but it's cool. and we're picking characters and then at 12:30, the other DM shows up. Me, the kid, and two other guys join the new DM. In the larger room that we're sharing with the board gamers, which is a little annoying. After a while, I stop noticing the extraneous noise, though.

As we're figuring out the characters, two other guys join us. So now we're six - two fighters, a cleric, a wizard, a rogue... and the sixth guy wants to double up on the rogue for some reason. Alright. Kiddo plays the rogue and I play the cleric of pelor (I know, I know). Seriously, nobody wanted to play a cleric which is odd to me because I think they got the biggest boost in 4E. We get minis. Not just ANY mini, mind you - alternate paint scheme minis. And you know what? They're really cool looking. Kid's is "Human Rake", I guess "rake" is a new rogue term. I got the cleric of pelor, and you know... these things are mass-produced, obviously, but there's more detail to them. It shows what they CAN do with the minis, if they chose to.

Wizards provided kits with everything we'd need (except dice other than D20's, which wasn't a problem). Pencils, minis, character sheets, and really nice maps like the ones that came with "Keep on the Shadowfell". DM volunteers got to keep the monster minis and other assorted stuff that makes me consider volunteering to DM out of greed next year.

Alright, so we finally get started. Turns out, two kids (acolytes of pelor, according to the module) are missing. Someone somehow figures out they're in this old mausoleum. The party is asked to retrieve them. Alright.

Module H1 showed us the "new" kobolds with actual personalities. The Game Day module did the same thing with the monsters they showed. I think the monster personalities are my favorite part of 4E.

the new rules for turning undead got way nerfed regarding area of effect.

(Then again, it's more realistic. I mean, really - if you have a holy symbol and you're showing it to the zombies, they're probably looking at the ground (I saw the thriller video, I know how zombies move when they're not dancing) and not your holy symbol - and besides, the ones in the back row can't see over the first row anyway. Not that undead are realistic, but you get the idea. Besides, I actually understand turning rules for the first time in many years!)

As we're going, we're assaulted by tards. Not our characters, us.

The group in the first room lets out. Now, prior to this, we'd have people passing by the big open area, but nobody's being rude - yet. So the couple in the matching outfits start "helping". Oh yeah. "You know, you can use your _____ power..." yeah, STFU. I finally had to say something.

Then we had random "wandering tards" - a new monster class in 4E apparently, talking loudly about how they don't like 4E and would rather play Hero System and D&D isn't a real roleplaying game anyway... yeah, fascinating... guess Saturday was also "LARP as a butthurt tard that didn't read any of 4E and is only regurgitating what he's read online day". Great, you hate 4E, how about you go hate it elsewhere and let us play it so we can figure out if we do or not?

Finally, the coup de grace - we're PLAYING. We're on the boss battle. Someone walks by, asks if we're playing 4E. We answer "yes...." in a monotone growl, and he picks up my kid's character sheet and asks to see it! "Dude, we're PLAYING with those!" No apology, just looks at me like I kicked his puppy (and I would've had he brought one) and walks away.

Total adventure took about two hours. I think this was a great intro to D&D, and snagged the module. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the pre-gens. I'm looking for them online without luck. If one of you has a suggestion as to where to look, hook a brutha up. (nevermind, found 'em... but if anyone has a better quality PDF, I wouldn't mind still getting a hookup).

Our DM (Solomon) was good. The adventure and supplies Wizards sent was good. Midnight? Eh... they provided table space, which was necessary. That's really all I can say about 'em. It's still my favorite gaming store, but... I dunno, I would've liked to see more. I mean it's Worldwide D&D Game Day - celebrate the game!

Shit. I just lost the game.

Overall, a positive experience and I'm glad we went. I'd like to use this module to introduce total RPG n00bs to D&D - provided I can get the pre-gens. And seriously, I'll be looking out for more "alternate paint" minis.

After learning more about Free RPG Day, I'll be doing that now. I'm telling ya, positive experience. The good kind of "positive", unlike your last AIDS test.

02:29 pm - Now I'm naked on display, all the bad guys know I'm gay.

So yesterday I had a lovely dinner with my chick, and we're outside Ben & Jerry's eating ice cream when a dude comes up to us, tells us he's filming a documentary about Obama and wants to know if he can ask us some questions and film us. Naturally, I agree.

And he asks us questions and we dazzle with brilliance. The questions were pretty predictable to those who've been paying even scant attention. "...and if you're next question is about race, that's not a factor either." I think it was, judging by the look on his face.

Anyway, everything we said was brilliant and not praising Obama, so expect it all to wind up on the cutting room floor in a film you'll never see anyway. It was still fun. Dude was quite professional about the whole thing.

Oh, and yes: Condeleeza Rice did, in fact, join the Kiss Army.

"Tommy Thayer used to play in a Kiss tribute band - and he still does!", Ace Frehley

Let's do more musical stuff.

I've been rediscovering some bands. Firstly, Fates Warning - a way underrated band.

I've also rediscovered Gwar. Or rather, I started paying attention to them again. I didn't really like where they were going with their later stuff. I still prefer "Ragnarok", "This Toilet Earth", that era. But I've heard some "newer" stuff that's really grabbed me - "The Ultimate Bohab", "Muderer's Muse". I missed Gwar, maybe it's time to get back into them.

Tell ya what I wish would make a return: X-Cops. Members of Gwar more-or-less switching off instruments and putting out cop outfits and adopting different personalities (the one from San Francisco's a faggot, of course. Before there was a Jim Dangle, there was Cobb Knobbler) and having great lyrics and stage production.

tell me these aren't brilliant lyrics for that concept:

Down to the cell where Bubba crowns you queen
Where the floors are cold and the bunk's unclean
And the soft bellied white boy gets fucked 'til he screams

When they beat you down like all the other fools
And you're sitting in a pile of your own stool
Then maybe you'll think about obeying some rules
When you figure out that you can't be king
And you're tired of being forced to act like a queen
Then you'll sit down and listen to the sound of the barbells cling

It's a dirty job but someones got to do it
So open up your ass so I can look into it
'Cause you never know what you're gonna find
When you ram your fist up a person's behind

Cavity Search on the side of the road
I'm almost positive I'm breking a code
But I'm the one who's in control
It's my job to search your hole

With a rubber glove pulled on my fist
I search your every orifice
Probing you with icy tools
I search for drugs and stir your stools

Paddy wagon rape, I can't get a date
Paddy wagon rape, honey, I'm working late

Fun, fun band.

Anyway, now that I've overloaded you with videos, here's another one. Stanhope - Walter's on Washington, July 31.

01:37 pm - In B4 racist... with assorted videos

Here in the lab, we have TVs with CNN on 'em running 24/7. If you didn't already know Obama captured the DNC nomination, you couldn't possibly escape it in the lab. They're already acting like he's president. While I wanted Hillary to take the nomination (so McCain could beat her), it is kind of nice seeing Hillary sad.

What's great about this is Hillary not conceding defeat, and the media acting like this is shocking.

Fellas, you ever argue with a woman - and no matter how right you are and how wrong she is - she just won't admit to it? She'll blame anything under the sun (vast right wing conspiracy, biased media, internet fundraising) til she finally goes completely off-topic. This is just Hillary saying "waah, you don't love me!" - which isn't what the debate was about in the first place. Next, she'll just ask to "drop it" without admitting she lost.

Why this is news is beyond me.

They say Bubba Clinton is banging Gina Gershon now, and I say good for him. I've cranked out many a batch to Gina, and if that elderly redneck can upgrade from that asexual beast he's "married" to, to that, he's doing alright. I now propose a slow clap Slick Willy.

*clap*... ... ... ... ... *clap*... ... ... .... *clap*... ... ... *clap*... ... *clap*... *clap*

Well, now we're going to be hearing that the #1 reason to vote for anyone other than Obama) is if you're a racist. Bullshit. I'm perfectly capable of separating my racism from my politics. There are several black people I'd vote for in a heartbeat:

Alan Keyes
Condi Rice (she's in the Kiss Army now, so she gets my vote)
Lando Calrissian (he did a good job administrating the Cloud City, didn't he?)

Granted, there will be many that wont vote for Obama solely because he's black. That's a shame, but there will be many that wont vote for McCain solely because he's old. We're all a lil' bit asshole.

Saw Symphony-X/Epica back in April. Actually, let me rephrase that: Saw Symphony-X and 1 1/2 songs from Epica because I fucked up and got us there late. Oops. I dig what I heard, and was especially impressed with Amanda Somerville, who was filling in for Simone. Check it, of course Randy's in the video:

and of course, Epica was the band my chick was there to see. Whoops. I liked Symphony-X more than I expected to. Very precise band with a lot of energy and stage presence. But, their songs start to sound alike after a while. I dig it, but in smaller doses.

--

Ace! Fuck yeah, Ace Frehley - lead guitar - shock me! Dude had a bass player who's voice sounded an awful lot like Gene Simmons. I bet that was a coincidence. Same with his drummer with a Paul Stanley like voice. Good show, if for no other reason than it's good to see Ace out & about again.

You missed me. Admit it. Let's just go where the wind takes us.

First, My kid was inducted into the school's thespain troupe two weeks ago. This last weekend, he was in the play:

Fuck yeah. Dancing corpse. This is thriller, thriller night, bitches. Respect.

Oh yeah, check out our new photos for his induction banquet. Fuck yes, we look sexy. Lemme hear from the ladies - long hair and formal wear is sexay, ain't it?

Fuck yes it is.

Mark your calendars: Today, I agree with Bill Clinton. At least I did til he apologized for it. He called a Vanity Fair reporter a scumbag (if he's a scumbag, say so) and said the media was completely biased and pushing for Obama. That's absolutely true, but I didn't see him bitching when the media was completely biased on his behalf, so he can screw.

and it looks like Obama's got the nomination. I voted for Hillary, just because polls show McCain has a shot at beating her. I'm not happy about McCain either, just he's the (somewhat) lesser of three evils. At the very least, we won't have a slit for president, so I'm happy about that.

Tell ya what, Obama best not put Hillary as his veep. Ask JFK jr what happens when you get in Hillary's way. Oh... right, you can't. He's dead.

--

So the 4E D&D books were leaked and... oh, I don't know. They fixed the things that needed fixing (turning, grappling, death), and caused new issues. It doesn't "feel" like D&D yet, but I suspect that'll change. I really dig the new monster personalities, and I could give a shit about gnomes not being in the 1st PHB. I do, however, hate this new line of minis they put out. (in b4 "reaper minis ftw" or "buy from the secondary market")

I'm not yet sold on switching to 4E, but I will be picking up the (legitimate) books at some point, and I'm saying that solely on the strength of two encounters in H1. Should the rest of H1 and/or Worldwide Game Day give me a bad taste, I'll reconsider that decision.

The best part about 4E, by far, is listening to butthurt purists whine about it. That's right, bitches - dragonborn are a core race now. QQ.

Can QRFC management start giving a fuck? Thanks in advance.

Stanhope's returning to Houston! July 31st, Walter's on Washington. Mark your calendars.

Oh, if you haven't yet - go see Iron Man right fucking now.

Played Carcassonne finally. Been hearing about it for years. This little burger joint kinda close to me decided to use half it's space for comics and collectibles and allows the tables to be used for gaming. Fuck yeah. Good burgers, too. Been around for a while now, so it must be working for 'em.

--

Oh. Anyone who tells me Battlestar Galactica isn't the best fucking show on television (that's currently on, one can argue The Shield but it's not on until "Fall") is a communist.

shit.

I know... he was in poor health for many years. But I was always hopeful a high-level cleric would cast some type of restoration on him. And I know: he hasn't been involved in D&D for many years.

But adolescence would've sucked without his game.

This wont be a "defense of D&D" blog. Play it or don't. Stereotypes be damned, I've met damn cool people playing this game.

I always hoped he'd somehow get his game back... or at least some respect from those who owned it. At least WotC paid lip service from time to time.

01:43 pm - BRAINS!

where to start?

I dunno. Lotsa stuff has changed since my last entry. I guess you already know about that by now. Hopefully ya don't hate me for it.

Work's alright, keeping me busy. School's alright, keeping me busy. Church stuff is alright, keeping me busy.

I'm progressing in my bass lessons. I think I'm ready to try to find guys to play with, but my schedule isn't allowing it. Maybe if I don't have night classes in the fall. Learning to play by ear, blah blah blah.

Still pimping out that whore you call "mom".

Owlcon's this weekend. No LARPing this year, just D&D and when I'm not doing that, loitering at the Mechcorps area.

I guess I'm stuck voting for McCain, huh? He'll get destroyed by the press. He was a media darling when he was against Bush, but now that he's going up against the democrats, they'll crucify him. If Hillary's smart, she'll name Obama her running mate as assassination insurance.

Cross dressing Muhammad. President Hillary Clinton. Fucking shit. We're living in the end times.

Let me pimp some bands real quick:

Ethereal Architect headlined the Six Minute Century / Mystic Cross show I had to miss because I lost my wallet. I really wanted to see them, too. Anyway, I've been hitting their page a lot.

Zero Hour has a new song on their page. It's yummy. Go listen to it. Or go fuck yourself. Either one.

Queensrÿche is next weekend. Yay, I guess. No multimedia or elaborate stage production this time out. Covers album. But: I've seen the set list and it looks good. Besides, Queensrÿche's never put on a bad show. Some better than others, sure... but never bad. Always a good time. I shant be traveling this time, though. And if SiD's doing something, I don't know about it. Moving the webpage to a myspace group was a mistake. I'll fix it before next tour.

10:38 am - his vocals on "Dracula" fucking blew away Barlow's.

Dear Jon Schaffer,

You fucked up.

"original singer" does not always mean "better singer". Exhibit A:

Exhibit B: You may not be aware of them, but while most of the metal world yawns at yet another Black Sabbath appearance at Ozzfest, people got damned excited about this little band that went on tour without a new album to support. That band was called Heaven & Hell.

"Framing Armageddon" doesn't suck because of Owen's vocals, it sucks because it's a lame concept. If you were looking for a way to top "The Glorious Burden", this wasn't it. You won't do it.

The inevitable live album after FA2 will fully illustrate the magnitude of this blunder. Owens shined on Barlow's material. You're gonna realize how much ass Owens kicks (and how much he gave your band and it's revolving-door lineup legitimacy) as soon as you hear anyone else do "Gettysburg".

11:56 am - Hey kids, let's talk Battletech

So many years ago, back in da day as the street kids say, I was hopelessly addicted to Virtual World's Battletech. Things happen like they always do, the "4077th Battletech Shack" closed, moved to Dave & Busters where they overpriced and undersupported the product and I stopped playing Battletech and missed the "good ol' days".

I am happy to report that when D&B's contract ended, that people that actually cared about the game opened up a place to play Battletech. I had no idea. They've just celebrated their 2nd anniversary, too. How I went this long not hearing about this is beyond me.

So, what's Battletech? It's a simulation where you control a thirty-foot tall, 75 ton walking tank. You're the pilot of a BattleMech competing against other players in the 31st century. Each 'Mech is equipped with ammo, cannons, lasers and missiles. Your basic job is to destroy your opponents while trying to withstand their attack on you.

So at it's heart, yes, it's a video game. And yes, it's run off the Mechwarrior 4 engine. If you have Mechwarrior 4, the expansion packs, and the fan-created content, you have a pretty good approximation of the Battletech software. But that's not where the experience lives. The coolness of Battletech lies in the hardware.

You're seated in what they call a Tesla pod. It looks like the trainers they use for fighter pilots - it's got all kinds of screens, buttons, flip switches, and fancy shit like that. You got pedals to control the mech's feet, and the joystick controls the upper torso. From picking your mech chassis, its weapons configuration, your trigger settings, your pilot mode - everything's very customizable... there's easy settings for noobs, to the more advanced settings for realism.

The software's gotten an upgrade since I played roughly 15 years ago. Here's what the game looks like now:

Eh, not very informative... but then I looked at the old "training" video they had when I played. Cheesy with bad graphics, yet I got a lump of nostalgia. At least they sunk some money into it and make fun of lame callsigns:

Oh yeah, the place is: Mechcorps in Houston
Oh, and if you wanna l2play:

Say what you will about the old fuck, but he gets it. New Springsteen song I just heard this morning. Apparently, I'm behind, as the album was released Oct 2. Jeebus, he was playing this live on TV back in September. I hate when things like this slip under my radar.
___

I was tryin' to find my way home
But all I heard was a drone
Bouncing off a satellite
Crushin' the last lone American night
This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?

I was spinnin' 'round a dead dial
Just another lost number in a file
Dancin' down a dark hole
Just searchin' for a world with some soul

This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?

I just want to hear some rhythm

I want a thousand guitars
I want pounding drums
I want a million different voices speaking in tongues

This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there?

Exactly. It's fun to see Silvio and Conan's sidekick doing their old-guy rock, too. Nothing fancy, just a good rock and roll rhythm. And yes, let's keep the bass up in the mix. Good man.

03:24 pm - Sofa King Cool.

So yeah, I had one of my favorite recent moments Monday night.

Those that know me know that I'm learning bass. I've also dabbled in guitar... which is to say I suck as a guitarist. But, I know a few things. Basic things.

So my kid finally brought his grades up and, as a result, I'm good with paying for his guitar lessons. He started Tuesday night. I feel like I should mention the instructor because he's a cool guy and a talented guitarist, but I feel like I shouldn't because I'm big on online privacy. So yeah... I'm not unintentionally neglecting to mention anybody, I'm purposefully neglecting to mention someone and that's somehow better.

Anyway, Monday night, I wanted to show him some VERY basic things... how to hold a pick, putting his finger right behind the fret, how to tune using an electronic tuner.

And I'm standing there in my living room, holding my bass, just fucking around. And my kid's standing next to me, holding his guitar, tuning.

And it was nothing... but it was sofa king cool.

Our Sugar Land D&D group is looking for another player. The group is VERY casual. We’re playing Paizo’s “Age of Worms” and we’re at level eight. The party’s lacking a tank right now, as that’s who left the group. We’re also kicking around the idea of starting a FR campaign, too.

We meet (roughly) every other Friday, rescheduling when real-life stuff gets in the way. But we hit the every other Friday mark more often than not.

Nightwish's new album came out yesterday. So did Metalocalypse: Season One. Dethklok's Dethalbum came out last week. Buy them all. Sell your asshole if you need to.

Lotsa cool shit coming up. Join me. Or go fuck yourself. Either one.
